Historical background
The Institute is housed in the Knafelj House in Vienna, which is known for being the residence for students from Slovenia and Carniola since 1676. Luka Knafelj as supporter of the funding of the future Slovene intelligentsia enabled many students to study at the University of Vienna. Among others France Prešeren and Oton Zupančič received Knafelj grants in the past.
Activities
One of the main Institute's activity is to assist and support research co-operation between educational institutions, universities, archives, libraries, musuems and individuals from Slovenia or Austria pursuing or conducting a research.
The Institute also organises regular lectures, symposium and conferences by guests from Slovenia or Austria and offers a publishing support to Slovene researchers. The Institute houses a library and also serves as a small exhibition venue for artists.
