Ballet teaching in Maribor originated with the Ballet Studio of the Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Maribor, which became part of the Centre for Music Education in 1977. However, in 1981 a secondary ballet programme was launched and the Centre for Music Education was amalgamated with Tabor Music School to form the Maribor Music and Ballet Secondary School. The School became an Art Grammar School in 1999. The music school has another branch in Maribor-Tabor and smaller units in Šentilj, Rače, Ruše, Selnica ob Dravi, Lovrenc na Pohorju, Lenart, Slovenska Bistrica, Poljčane and Oplotnica.
