History
Since 1960s the study programmes in Slovene, English, Germanic, Hungarian studies, History, Geography, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology and Pedagogy were taught at the Pedagogy Academy at the University of Maribor. The newly established Departments at the Faculty are Translation studies and Art History. The Faculty of Arts was formally established in 2006 as an independent faculty. With the opening of the institutionally independent faculty the city of Maribor established a study centre for arts and humanities.
Today
In 2008 the Faculty was employing 96 members of the academic staff. Since its foundation the Faculty developed and opened several study centres: Centre for Life-long Education, Centre for Eco-remediation, Centre for the Study of the Post-Yugoslav Societies, Centre for Intercultural Dialog between the countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The Faculty is actively invloved in international cooperation with regional, European and worldwide universities. It is involved in different mobility and internship programmes: ERASMUS and CEEPUS. The Faculty has signed bilateral agreements with several universities in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Macedonia, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Span, Sweden, Turkey and Great Britain.
The Faculy's Library Miklošičeva knjižnica is a common library of the Faculty of Education and The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Library has a fond of around 120,000 units and is one of the largest university libraries within the University of Maribor. The library has provided reading places with 150 seats.
At the Faculty of Arts there is a gallery space where exhibitions of many Slovenian painters and artists take place.
The Faculty publishes several scientific journals at the Publishing centre. The Department of Slavic languages and Literature publishes Slavia Centralis. The biannually published journal has an international editorial board and has a circulation of 300 copies.
The Department of Geography publishes Revija Geography (Geography Review) which has international editioral board and is publishing articles in Slovenia, English and German. The articles of the first two numbers are available online.
The Faculty of Arts publishes international collection ZORA. Since 1998 they have being published 68 editions of ZORA. The collection is publishing articles in the variety of disciplines (English studies, Slavic Languages, History, Education ...) and the description of every edition is available online.
