Launched in 1978, the Mentor aims to develop an interest in understanding the literature, the magazine publishes literary texts, interviews, reviews, reports on symposia, and festivals. It incorporates literary competitions to stimulate young creative writers and is illustrated by students.

Magazine is published five times per year, it is one of the four publishing projects devoted to literature at the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia. The others include: Paralele ('Parallels'), the multilingual journal for expats living in Slovenia; Prvenke ('Debuts') for young and upcoming authors; and other reference and occasional literature.

Each year several competitions are put up, magazine Mentor organises the already traditional competition Veseličnica ('Happy-Go-Lucky') for the best humorous stories. The selected work is awarded and published in the magazine. The content and description of each magazine number is available online.
