The Government of the Republic of Slovenia offers limited number of scholarships for each academic year to Slovene citizens and foreign students or researchers who wish to come to Slovenia as high school or tertiary scholars, enrolled at high schools, colleges and universities based in Slovenia.
State-funded scholarships
The Ministry of Labour, Familiy and Social Affairs offers scholarships of different amounts to candidates coming from socially and financially family background. Every year in June the Ministry publishes an open call to grant state-funded scholarships, although the candidates applying for the first time can send the application throughout the whole year. The application and the selection is carried out under the proper Centre for Social Work.
The Slovene citizens, the European Union citizens and the citizens of European Economic Area (EEA) are eligible to apply.
The scholarships are granted for all fields of study offered by Slovene universities and high schools. Only a few of the scholarships are applied for in global competition; priority is given to citizens of countries with bilateral agreements or countries with which direct reciprocal exchange of government scholarships exists, and to applicants who have already established contacts with Slovene university institutions or departments that are willing to accept them for the proposed term. The age limit of candidates is 35 years and the duration of the scholarship can range from three to nine months. The scholarship cannot be granted for any Slovene language courses. Tuition fees cannot be covered from the scholarship, which only covers free accommodation in the facilities of the Student Centre of the Universities, free basic medical insurance (if there is no bilateral agreement on health insurance), a minimum stipend for monthly living costs and some fringe benefits. Candidates should speak Slovene or the language agreed upon with their mentor/supervisor.
