Production
Ana Monró Theatre production includes over 50 theatre and musical performances that were presented both indoors and on the street and are based on the reinterpretation of genres, original ideas, collective work, involvement of the audience, improvisation, and gags. Recognised for its satirical approach, caustic humour, and a wide range of references (from the absurd of Samuel Beckett to the iconography of Alan Ford), the group’s productions include The Wedding [Poroka], in which the actors are during the course of the performance gradually replaced by the members of the audience, an ironic and minimalist burlesque without text Emergency Room [Urgenca], the surrealist performance The Cage [Kletka], inspired by Orwell’s 1984 and The Animal Farm and directed by Craig Weston, and the performance The Golden Ass [Zlati osel], also directed by Craig Weston and based on the only Latin novel to survive in its entirety Metamorphoses by Apuleius.
Ana Monró Theatre was founded by the well-known poet and actor Andrej Rozman Roza and interdisciplinary artist Marko A. Kovačič. Presently the core members of the theatre include Primož Ekart, Gorazd Osojnik, Žiga Saksida, Borut Cajnko, Gorazd Žilavec, Drago Milinović, and Matjaž Ocvirk. Ana Monró Theatre played an important role in the establishment of KUD France Prešeren Arts and Culture Association in Ljubljana.
GAM has travelled widely throughout the former Yugoslavia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Columbia, France, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, and Switzerland.
Street theatre training
In autumn 2007, Ana Monró Theatre launched a course in street theatre ŠUGLA to stimulate the development of the Slovene street theatre scene and its production. Held once a week during a two-year period, the programme provides education and training in different fields (acrobatics, fire eating/breathing, theatre improvisation, movement, acting, costume design, etc.), taught by renowned tutors in 12 different modules.
Within the frame of Ana Desetnica International Street Theatre Festival, the programme MašinA is organised, which gives opportunity to young street theatre artists to present their work at the festival.
Ana Desetnica Festival
Since 1998, Ana Monró Theatre organises an annual Ana Desetnica International Street Theatre Festival.
International Cooperation
Between 2003 and 2006, the theatre was involved in an international network Eunetstar and in 2008 and 2009 it was a member of Meridians, a co-production network of festivals from Great Britain, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and Sweden, within which it also co-produced two international performances: Alhambra Container [Kontejner Alhambra] (2008) and Remember the Future [Spomni se bodočnosti] (2008). Since 2001, GAM is also a member of the international Network Circostrada, European Platform for Information, Research and Professional Exchanges.
Ana Monró Theatre is the initiator of the project The Mast of Europe within the frame of Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012. The project will establish a connection between Maribor and the Portuguese Guimarães and the future Capital of Culture in Marseilles (2013) and the former ones in Bologna, Genoa, Madrid, Salamanca, Lisbon, and Porto.
