Following the idea of Paris salons from the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century (Salon des Indépendants, Salon d’Automne and Salon des Refusés) was the May Salon established in the beginning of 20th century as the exhibition of such. The first exhibition featured new works of Slovene Impressionists in Mestni dom in Ljubljana – at that time very avantgard act.

In last decades organised more and less regularly by the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU), the May salon gives annually the possibility to its around 680 members to exhibit their newest production. The exhibition is usually organised in the Springtime and has as a rule the classic character: it features predominantly works created in classic media (painting and sculpture). Since last few years the May salon changes regularly its location. Also its focus is marked each year by changes.

Since the 1990s the May Salon has concluded with the presentation of the May Salon Award on the artist of the best work and on the best young artist. In 2008 the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) Gallery presented the exhibition of awarded artists from 2006 to 2008.

Works displayed at the May Salon exhibition are usually for sale.

Location

Through 80s and 90s it usually took place at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana and at Jakopičev paviljon, today the Jakopič Gallery. In 2005 it was hosted for the first time by four galleries on the coast, and co-organised by Insula-Obala Visual Artists Association. Since then the Slovene May salon was guest of different institutions around Slovenia: in 2006 was featured in Grad Gallery in Slovenska Bistrica, in 2007 in Murska Sobota Gallery, in 2008 in Lendava-Lendva Gallery and Museum. In 2009 the May salon was organised in Gorenjska Museum and featured 137 artists as Beti Bricelj, Dragica Čadež, Andreja Džakušič, Viktor Gojkovič, Klementina Golja, Eva Heimer, Zdenko Huzjan, Andrej Jemec, Zmago Jeraj, Barbara Jurkovšek, Vladimir Makuc to name just few of them.

Focus

For years the May salon exhibited works of the artist choice without any focus. Since the 90s it focused thematic. Between 1997 and 1999 the focus based on the type of the used media: new media (1997), sculpture (1998), painting (1999). In 2000 the theme was the Primordial Touch [Prvinski dotik]. In 2003 all 110 works were again shown unselected. The 2004 May Salon presented the work of 130 artists from all of the Slovene regions under the name POP; with P as Pomembno (Interesting) or Prešerno (Merry'), O as Odlično (Excellent) or Odvisno (Dependent) and P as Prezrto (Overlooked) and Pozabljeno (Forgotten). The edition of 2008 in Lendava featured 121 artists and was again more free (entitled the Freedom of Creation [Svoboda ustvarjanja]). In 2009 the May salon exhibited works of 137 artist and again offered the theme: My Image [Moja podoba].
