Introduction


Celje Museum of Recent History was established in 1951 as a department for the History of the National Liberation War at Celje Municipal Museum.In a year 1963 this became an independent cultural institution and moved into premises of former townhall of Celje (1830–1963) where is situated today. This is a public museum and focuses on research, protection, documentation and presentation of movable cultural heritage of town Celje and Lower Savinjska region from the beginning of the 20th century until present times. Museum has five permanent exhibitions and numerous collections of general history, children toys and creativity, trading, numizmatics, Celje goldsmith history, dentistry, arms and decorations, video and photo library consisting of photo plates and negatives some dating as far as the end of 19th century. Museum is a member of ICOM. Museum's Head of Department of communication and public relations is Andreja Rihter which used to be Minister of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia from year 2000 until 2004.


History of the museum

  • 1963 this became an independent cultural institution. Museum moved into premises of former townhall of Celje (1830–1963) where is situated today.
  • 1979 the museum obtained additional premises
  • 1987-89 a permanent exhibition on the development of the town of Celje after the Second World War was set up.
  • 1991 the institution was renamed the Celje Museum of Recent History.
  • 1993 the museum opened its dentistry collection, donated to the museum by private collector Dr. Franc Štolf.
  • 1995 first Slovenian Children's Museum Herman's Den opened in the premises of the Celje Museum of Recent History.
  • 2000 the permanent exhibition Life in Celje opened.


Museum administers Fund of Alma Karlin(1889-1950) world traveller, writer and anthropologist from Celje that consists of drawings, sketches, photographic material, corespondence and testimonies about her.

Celje Museum of Recent History runs two separate museum collections outside of the museum premises. One is Josip Pelikan Photographic Studio, Celje, and the other is Stari Pisker Prison, Celje.

Education

Museum puts a great effort on international educational program called School of Museology Celje in collaboration with Museumsakademie Joanneum Graz and Reinwardt Academie Amsterdam. In October 2009 museum hosted international museum workshop with the topic New Trends in Museology with dr. Peter van Mensch and Léontine Meijer van Mensch from Reinwardt Academie Amsterdam.

Every year they organise also Summer School of Museology on the Slovenian coast in historical town of Piran. This year's topic was Museums and Turism.
