Centre for Preventive Archaeology
Background
Establishing the Preventive Archaeology Centre means the discontinuity of the current practise, when the protection of archaeological heritage was in domain of regional offices. Conservator – archaeologist performed both an executive tasks and control over interventions in the archaeological heritage and carried out policies of protection of archaeological heritage.
Programme / Mission
The Preventive Archaeology Centre manages and carries out the preliminary archaeological research, ensures methodological and infrastructural development in the area of archaeological research and post-excavation procedures, carries out research projects commissioned by the Ministry of Culture in the area of preventive archaeology, provides internships and supplementary training, provides work experience for those engaged in courses of study in conservation and restoration, and develops public awareness of preventive archaeology.
Venues, branches
There are eight regional department with quarters at regional offices of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, in Celje, Kranj, Ljubljana, Maribor, Ptuj, Nova Gorica, Novo mesto and Piran. Underwater Archaeology Division is to be mentioned too.
Projects
In project SAAS, carried out from 1994, archaeological excavations and research and work on motorway traces are implemented. Another important project on preliminary archaeological research takes place on area destined for future hydroelectric power on middle Sava. On the contrary to project SAAS, were preliminary archaeological research was parallel to building the motorways, the centre carries out research work at whole Slovenian area and by all interventions. Within the public service the centre will carry out also preliminary field investigations in accordance with the plan of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.
Collections
At the centre will be the temporary storage of archaeological finds. Finds, discovered in preliminary archaeological research, will be handed over to competent museum within five years of completion of fieldwork research.
Publishing / Publications
A new serial publication Monografije Centra za preventivno arheologijo (Monographies of Preventive Archaeology Centre) was created for publishing the conclusions of the research work.
