Founded in 1981, Rogatec Open Air Museum is the largest open air museum in Slovenia. It presents unique cultural, ethnological, regional, historical features of eastern Slovenia. The museum presents the life and work of farmers and craftsmen at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, in the Rogatec area, particularly in the Boč, Donačka Gora and Macelj Hills. In 1999 it was declared a cultural site of national importance by order of the Government (Official Gazette of Slovenia, 18/99). In 1997 Rogatec Open Air Museum was nominated for European Museum Award.

Open Air Museum has 15 different relocated or reconstructed buildings and associated materials make up the museum space and form three separated sections. Homestead of poet Jože Šmid with the garden, outhouse with manure pit and field toilet, beehives, pig stable and hay rack. Administrative part are loden old shop with mixed merchandise that is today also a museum shop and office. In third part there is an domestic inn with wine cellar with bar called pušenšank surrounded with vines that give shadow and grapes.
