ARNES, Academic and Research Network of Slovenia
}}
ARNES builds, maintains and manages infrastructure which links universities, institutes, research laboratories, museums, schools, databases and digital libraries. It offers its users the same services as the national academic networks in other countries with which it co-operates in European Commission projects in testing, developing and introducing new Internet protocols and services.
The ARNES network links over 1,000 Slovene organisations, making its services available to nearly 200,000 people. International connections with educational and research networks in other countries are provided through the several-dozen gigabit GEANT2 network, which is co-financed by the European Commission. Users can therefore co-operate in international projects which require fast and reliable information-communications connections, stable videoconference transmissions and the transmission of large amounts of data. ARNES also plays an active role in the Commission projects SAFE-SI and Spletno oko, which are part of the European action plan Safer Internet.
ARNES is a full national member of TERENA (the Trans-European Research and Educational Networking Association), a shareholder in DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe Ltd), a member of CEENet (Central and Eastern European Networking Association) and a member of RIPE, NREN PC, CENTR, EURid, FIRST, and Euro-IX. It also participates in many European projects in the field of network technologies and network services.
