Organised each June by the ŠKUC Association, the Living Literature Festival is a literary and musical event staged on the pedestrian street in front of the ŠKUC Gallery in old town Ljubljana. The festival presents local and foreign writers, poets and musicians. The festival was initiated in 1994 by Andrej Morovič, a writer and a performer, and is one of the oldest admission-free events in Ljubljana with a view to popularising literature and music.
The festival happenings are open to all as they are held on the old square (Stari trg) in Ljubljana. Readings by Slovene and foreign authors, talks with the participating writers, translation workshops, discussions on literature and the fusion of music and literature feature in the programme.
An accompanying programme O'živela knjiga (The animated book) features book sales, creative workshops where discarded books are put to new uses, a street reading spot and book presentations. In the spirit of promoting literature to people of all ages, special activities, some of which are intended for children, are organised, namely creative writing workshops and meetings with the authors. In Škuc Gallery exhibitions are held as part of accompanying programme.
