The house in which linguist, literary historian and librarian Matija Čop (1795-1835) was born is that of an average well-off family in Gorenjska, with a history that dates back to the 16th century. Opened by the Upper Sava Valley Museum, Jesenice on 26 January 1997, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Matija Čop, the house has been restored in period style and now contains the permanent collections The Life and Times of Matija Čop, Čop’s Creative Work, Matija Čop and France Prešeren and Matija Čop - Librarian. On a Biedermeier desk in the centre of the room photocopies of manuscripts and published texts are exhibited, and in a showcase published issues of Čop's works are on view. An important element of the exhibition is a multimedia programme, which can be viewed in the adjacent former cellar. A collection of archaeological material from the late Roman upland outpost on Ajdna over Potoki is also on display. The house is used for a variety of activities organised by the Žirovnica Primary School under the heading ‘The Path of Cultural Heritage'. It is a venue for cultural activities connected with the Cultural Heritage Path and is also used by locals of the new Municipality of Žirovnica.

Collection and venue

Photocopies of manuscripts and published texts are exhibited on a Biedermeier desk in the centre of the room, and published issues of Čop's works are on view in a showcase. An important element of the exhibition is the multimedia programme, which can be viewed in the adjacent former cellar. A collection of archaeological material from the late Roman upland outpost on Ajdna over Potoki is also on display. The Ajdna site contains archaeological remains from Roman times: 6 residences, sacral objects, and 11 tombs, dating from the 5th to 6th century AD.

The homestead of Matija Čop is also used for a variety of cultural activities organised by the Žirovnica Primary School. Together with the birthplaces of France Prešeren, Fran Saleški Finžgar and Janez Jalen this house is included on the Path of Cultural Heritage route in the Municipality of Žirovnica.
