A national reading room was established in Kočevje as early as 1919, but the library was not founded until 1951. Today it offers information and cultural events to the population of the region, which comprises some 17,500 inhabitants. Registered readership of the library totals some 4,000 individuals, who have access to a collection of around 60,000 books, 2,000 audio visual items and more than 600 periodicals. The mobile library offers literature to the local old people’s home and to the inhabitants of Osilnica and Kostel. The 1,000 square-metre library incorporates a department for adults with a 40-seat study room, a department for youth and children and a special department for literature related to the region (eg notations by local composer Miloš Humek and research works by pupils of Kočevje Grammar School).

The media department offers a selection of DVD titles, while in the music corner members can listen to a variety of genres and artists. The library hosts several events, such as story-telling hours, lectures, literary evenings, author meetings, creative workshops, and exhibitions.
