Vrhnika was twinned with a small town Iolkos (Thessaly, Greece) in 2008. According to ancient Greek mythology the ship Argo set sail from Iolcos. On their journey the Argonauts crossed also the Vrhnika region. A traditional Argonauts Days festival takes place in Vrhnika every June.

The Municipality of Vrhnika covers a total area of 126 square kilometres and has a population of 17,651 people (2002) living in 21 settlements. The municipality recently initiated a town-twinning project with Gonars, Italy.
