The Institute of Slovene Language was established in 1945 for the purpose of compiling linguistic materials and creating the basic Slovene language resources: a dictionary of orthography and pronunciation; a dictionary of standard Slovene; descriptive and historical studies in linguistics; an historical-onomastic dictionary; an historical-topographical dictionary; a linguistic atlas; monographs on texts in various dialects; and phonogramic archives of dialects. Since 1982 the Institute has included sections for the development of lexical, etymological-onomastic, dialectical and terminological dictionaries. The Institute's basic research into the Slovene language both past and present and the extensive compilation of unique materials are important for the development of linguistics in Slovenia and at an international level. The Institute has been involved in several international projects, including the General Slavonic Linguistic Atlas (OLA), the European Linguistic Atlas (ALE), Trans-European Language Resources Infrastructure (TELRI II), the International Federation of Terminological Centres and Banks (IFTB), and the Encyclopaedia of Slovene Onomastics - EOS.
The Institute publishes the Slovene Linguistic Studies journal.
