The Tomaž Godec Museum was founded in an erstwhile tannery in Bohinjska Bistrica established::1979 within the former home of athlete, mountaineer, and progressive politician Tomaž Godec (1905–1942), a vigorous champion of tourism development in Bohinj who was executed during World War II. For over 20 years three permanent exhibitions were displayed; The Tannery museum, The Little War museum of the Soča front, 1915–1917, and an exhibition on Tomaž Godec. The Gorenjska Museum took over the management of the collections in 1997 and has reconceptualised the displays. In 2015 the top floor reopened with the permanent exhibitions on the First and Second World War.

One of the collections is dedicated to the life and work of Tomaž Godec himself, while another focuses on the major historical event which took place at the house in 1939 – the drawing up of the constitution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia.

Another collection is dedicated to the Soča and Alpine Fronts 1915–1917, illustrating the two front lines of World War I which ran through the area. Exhibits include over 1,100 objects and documents which in uniquely portray the strategic course of the battles and the hardships of the soldiers who participated in them.

Under the auspices of the Technical Museum of Slovenia, a tannery owned and run by Tomaž Godec prior to the Second World War has been reconstructed in the museum grounds. Today it is the only tannery museum in Slovenia which illustrates traditional methods of tanning.

The museum also organises occasional exhibitions, for example, in 2009 an exhibition on Customs and Myths in the Bohinj Region.
