KUD Anarhiv is a non-governmental organisation established in 1999 and based at the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone. It runs a number of educational and art related programmes, as well as those that encourage recognition of injustices in the society. Most of its projects are aimed at children and youth, and are often initiated and led by students and other young peoples. It seeks to empower youth by ways transmitting information and encouraging education outside formal contexts, critical thought and self-initiative.

Its programmes are always available for free, and often involve volunteering. Often, Anarhiv collaborates and relates with other institutions such as Šiška Library, MSUM, Klub Gromka, KUD Mreža Arts and Culture Association, Radio Študent (RŠ), and the Slovenian Theatre Institute.

The Reading room

The central project, which was actually already started some time before the organisation was formally established, is the so called Elf's Reading Room (Škratova čitalnica), a library of varied, and often times otherwise hard to access books and other reading materials that primarily deal with radical social theories and criticism, with counter-cultural and subcultural currents, and with with liberation movements and reflections relating to class, sex, race, or nature.

The Elf's Reading Room houses a growing collection of magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, books, and video material. Most of this is in English language, and is all easily searchable through the website based search engine. While the reading room has been traditionally situated in a defunct mobile library in the inner courtyard of Metelkova, it has recently move to the city centre and the Kersnikova street. The children material is available at the mobile Škratov Bibliobus.

At the library premises, an information office is also located, providing information on worker's rights, funding options, youth work, employment possibilities, and so on. It forms a part of the Ljubljana Network of Info Points (L'MIT).

Programme activities

As KUD Anarhiv has been involved in literately dozen of projects, only some of the more recent ones are mentioned here. Amongst them are a French language class (done by way of dynamic, innovative practices), and African literature class (which involve reading selected authors and discussing their specific literary, cultural, social and political implications), a seminar on theatrical and dance theory and practice (taking place at the Slovenskem gledališkem inštitutu, and also involving radio shows, public events, discussion with artists, etc), different and numerous workshops on sound (which involves sound design and production, publishing, recording and sound mixing, etc), a series of discussion and screenings of films and/or TV series, using as a basis the television studies).

There is also the so called Škratmobil (Elfmobil), which prinaša pisano paleto aktivnosti, ki smo jih vsebinsko zastavili glede na specifične potrebe lokalnih skupnosti v Beli Krajini. Projekt se bo v letu 2015 izvajal v sodelovanju s partnerji: Zavod za uveljavljanje vizualne kulture Vizo, Izobraževalni center za zdravo življenje Educor, Kulturni dom Semič, Knjižnica Črnomelj, KUD Plac Metlika. It is a mobile social-cultural platform for yout and children, finaced by the Norwegian financial mechanism.

=Past projects

A very important part of the KUD Anarhiv activities has always been a focus on film, with the Elf's Film School (Škratova filmska šola), taking place between 2009 and 2012 and offering an innovative combination of film theory and practice. The lectures and workshops are held throughout the year and are conducted by young film theorists and film-makers. It was very important for the information of the younger generation critics take on film. The 'school' has eventually led top the publishing of three collection of texts, which feature film theory as well as literary works and more. In scope of these programmes, selected films and documentaries were screened in collaboration with Klub Groka. In the same vein were regular weekly video screenings entitled "VHS Guerilla".

There was a reading debate circle where seminal humanities and epistemology texts are discussed (in relation to MSUM); a project on permacultural and self-sufficient gardening; creative workshops for children; workshops on edible food in urban areas; summer schools on feminism; and člectures focused on analysing fantasy literature.
