The Slovenian Institute of Migration conducts interdisciplinary research of migration processes in Slovenia and in the international environment. Its expertise is based on the past focus on emigration processes, organisation, cultural activities and acculturation problems of Slovene emigrants. Since 2009 the Institute has been a member of The International Network of Migration Institutions that includes museums and other institutions promoting the public understanding of migration.

The institute has a manifold of archive collections (documents, letters, photographs and tapes) and a collection of emigrant periodicals available for the public. Its separate lending library holds research publications (monographs, proceedings and journals) on international migration and a collection of literary works created by Slovenian emigrant writers.

Publications

The Institute has been publishing its research-based monographic editions in the series Migrations since 2001.

Since 1990 it publishes a biannual Dve domovini Journal ("Two Homelands"), the main scientific review on migration studies which is available also on-line.

As the main scientific institution the Institute participates also in the Slovenci.si project, a common on-line platform for Slovenians abroad since 2008.
