Subtitled "a magazine for new dimensions of living", Hiše Magazine is a research and educational bi-monthly publication co-funded by 28 companies engaged in house construction and the furnishing industry. It has been published by Zavod Big since 1999 in Slovene; since May 2009 in both Slovene and English language. The magazine explores the most influential architectural trends, discovers breathtaking architectural projects, and presents good architectural practices from the local region and beyond, with a particular focus on individual housing and interior design. It features interviews and reviews of books on architecture. Special issues are dedicated to better living environment, sustainable development, and greater use of renewable and environment-friendly materials.
Every October the Zavod Big organises the Month of Design in Ljubljana with a number of events happening throughout the city. The National Design Awards are granted to best designers. Since 2009 the Hiše Awards are awarded for best individual housing project at the Big Architecture Festival, organised by the Zavod Big together with the Hiše Magazine. The project 180˚Stage – a series of engaging short, time-limited presentations – is accompanying each issue of the magazine, starting with a theme What makes a good house? in March 2010.
In 2009 the exhibition 11x ena hiša (11 times one house) has taken place at the Arhitectural Gallery DESSA showing 11 examples of single-family houses that were published in Hiše Magazine in years 2007–2008. The exhibition spotlighted some of the questions that architects face when designing this type of house. The exhibition 11x ena curated by editor Maja Ivanič was organised in partnership with DESSA also in years 2005 and 2006 (with a focus on renovation), to highlight great architectural projects in Slovenia.
Ongoing exhibitions of architectural and design projects are addressing citizens in the centre of Ljubljana from the urban display unit City Spider (Migetalkar) designed by Dominika Batista in 2006.
