Film education in Slovenia

Film and TV directing education

Most Slovene film makers are trained at the Department of Film and Television, Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) at the University of Ljubljana, although a number of Slovene film directors were trained at the FAMU Academy in Prague where they study film directing or the subjects which are not taught in Ljubljana: puppetry, film production, film camera and photography.

Scriptwriting education

As AGRFT taught scriptwriting theory only, the annual Show Your Tongue - International School of Film Narration was initiated in 1997 to fill the gap in the film education. The school has hosted many international guests up to 2000 and has published several books on scriptwriting. Another school organising workshops related to film is the PoEtika Film School.

Film theory education

At present film history and film theory is only offered as a part of the Sociology programme at the Department of Sociology, University of Ljubljana, although the abundance of film publications in Slovenia (cf the output of the Research and Publishing Department, Slovenian Cinematheque, Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis, Ljubljana or UMco) might suggest more extensive training provision.

The gap is filled with seminars like the Autumn Film School, International Colloquium of Film Theory, an international film theory and criticism seminar in Ljubljana, has been an important educational forum with lectures published.

Film education is also offered informally through lectures and discussions organised around film screenings at venues such as Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre, Film Programme and Kinodvor Cinema .

Last but not the least, the Visuality Summer School organised by the Audiovisual Laboratory, Institute of Slovene Ethnology in Nova Gorica presents an important documentation method learning opportunity for those studying humanities. Mention should also be made of the Film Programme, Public Fund for Cultural Activities and Luksuz Production, DZMP from Krško - the latter has organised numerous workshops within the Kino OTOK - Isola Cinema Festival.
