Course of competition
Each year, around 20 Slovenian choirs (composed of at least 12 singers) and vocal groups (composed of at least 4 and no more than 12 singers) compete for gold, silver, and bronze plaques, as well as special diplomas with monetary prizes. Singers are only allowed to participate in the choir on an amateur (non-professional) basis, while conductors can be professional musicians. The performances of the ensembles are judged by a five-member jury, consisting of three national and two international members.
Obligatory programme
The obligatory program of the participant choirs must include a composition written before 1920, an original composition or arrangement of a Slovenian folk song by a Slovenian composer, written from 2009 to the present, and other pieces of the choir’s choosing.
The obligatory program of the participant vocal groups must include a composition by a composer born between 1500 and dead by 1750, an original composition or arrangement of a Slovenian folk song by a Slovenian composer, written from 2009 until now, and other pieces of the vocal group’s choosing.
The program must contain a minimum of three pieces and is limited to a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 16 minutes of pure music. One of the pieces in the program may be performed with instrumental accompaniment if this is provided for in the original of the chosen piece. Only non-intonated instruments may be used in any performance of other works. Compositions with soloists are only allowed if the solo part is not predominant.
