A primary task of the [[National Gallery of Slovenia Library]] is to collect publications and photo materials on art heritage related to Slovene ethnic territory and the east Alpine cultural area, covering areas as art history, museology, conservation and restoration and museum education. The Library publications are purchased, the large portion of yearly additions is made up of exchanges with numerous museum establishments at home and abroad. Recently the Library encompasses more than 33 tausend catalogued volumes, of which around 600 are serial publications. As service for the core activities of the National Galleries, the Library is opened also for other professionals of the field and interested public for two hours on working days. Material can not be loaned and taken home.

Since its foundation has the Library also the hemeroteque that contains press clippings related to the contents and activities of the [[National Gallery of Slovenia|National Gallery]], older art and architecture heritage, and cultural policies that are in one way or another connected to museum/gallery activities and preservation of art heritage.
  
Newly acquired material from 1998 to 2002 has been processed by means of the INFOLIT program, whereas since 2003 the library works actively in the framework of the [[COBISS - Slovene Virtual Library]]. Older literature has not yet been fully processed.
