The daily newspaper [[Večer]] ('Evening') has appeared since 1952 and is the central newspaper in the eastern Slovenia published by Večer Newspaper Publishing Company Ltd. Its current print-run is 65,000 copies per issue and an online version has been available since 1998 at [http://www.vecer.com http://www.vecer.com]. According to the National Research on Readership Večer was read daily in 2006 by 141,000 people, giving it an 8.2 per cent daily reach. Večer correspondent offices are located in Ljubljana, Celje, Murska Sobota, Ravne na Koroškem, Slovenska Bistrica, Ptuj, Ormož and Trbovlje. The Culture and Education section incorporates several special supplements: Čitalnica (Reading Room) on Monday, Šolska stran (School page) and Znanost (Science) on Tuesday, Film on Wednesday, Arhitekturna beseda (Architectural Word) on Thursday and a TV supplement on Friday. Two pages of the Saturday Supplement are also dedicated to culture. Večer has co-operated with the French newspaper Le Soir and other international newspapers.

The newspaper confers the annual Večernica Award for the best literary work by young people.
