History
In 1945 professor Oton Bajde established a music school in the parish of the protestant church in Maribor. He founded a chamber ensemble and a choir, which performed at many ceremonies and other occasions.
In 1962 the school moved to its current location on Mladinska ulica 12 and became a part of the Centre for Music Education. Ballet teaching in Maribor originated with the Ballet Studio of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor, which also became part of the Centre for Music Education in 1977. However, in 1981 a secondary ballet programme was launched and the Centre for Music Education was amalgamated with Tabor Music School to form the Maribor Music and Ballet Conservatory. In the beginning the ballet dance course was taught by the Head of Ballet of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor, the choreographer Iko Otrin.
In the school year 1999/2000, the Conservatory, which has another branch in Maribor-Tabor and smaller units at Šentilj, Rače, Ruše, Selnica ob Dravi, Lovrenc na Pohorju, Lenart, Slovenska Bistrica, Poljčane and Oplotnica, introduced its art grammar school programme.
Programme
The curriculum of the Conservatory includes general subjects such as math, the English language, biology and physics. The music department offers both classes in musical instruments and music theory. The students can enrol in courses of singing, playing string, wind and brass instruments as well as other instruments such as the organ, zither and the diatonic accordion.
