The idea of setting up a professional European theatre network was first raised in November 2004 at the inaugural meeting of representatives of theatres and festivals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia and Turkey in Bitola (Macedonia). A year later, at a meeting held in Nova Gorica in October 2005, the New European Theatre Action (NETA) was established with the aim of promoting cultural co-operation between European countries by exchanging performances, artists and technical staff, initiating co-productions, training experts and engaging in publishing projects. In 2007 there were 25 NETA Association signatories, from Albania (3), Bosnia and Herzegovina (2), Bulgaria (2), Croatia (2), Germany (1), Italy (1), Macedonia (3), Montenegro (1), Romania (1), Russia (1), Serbia (2), Turkey (1) and Slovenia (3 - the Slovene representatives are the Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Nova Gorica, the Borštnik Meeting and Ex Ponto International Festival. Since November 2007 the secretariat of NETA is based at the B-51 Cultural Society.
