Litterae slovenicae was launched in 1990 succeeding the former magazine Le livre slovène (1963–1990). Published twice a year by the Slovene Writers’ Association, it presents Slovene literary texts of different genres, encompassing multiple generations of writers, both contemporary and classic, translated into various languages, mostly German, French, English, Russian, Italian, and Spanish. The aim of the publication is to promote Slovene literature and culture abroad.

The magazine primarily publishes original Slovene literature in translation, foregrounding single authors, genres or periods. Some issues have also been dedicated to essays, bibliographies, reviews, and literary events, such as the Vilenica International Literary Festival. Litterae Slovenicae is of particular interest to foreign literary agents, publishers, literary critics, translators, and university professors. It is featured at international book fairs, literary festivals, universities, cultural centres, embassies, etc. Some of the topics included in the magazine have been: Contemporary Slovene Short Stories (1991, issue 79), Ten Slovenian Poets of the Nineties (2002, issue 100), Tales Growing Up into Secrets. An Anthology of Contemporary Slovene Youth Literature (2007, issue 111), and Tomaž Šalamun: When the Shadow Breaks (2011, issue 128).
