The Ivan Rakovec Institute of Palaeontology was founded in 1949 and named after Ivan Rakovec (1899–1985), a Slovene geologist and palaeontologist. The Institute is a part of Scientific Research Centre (ZRC SAZU) at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) and collects, conserves, studies and interprets the rich fossil heritage of Slovenia and makes its findings known by publishing its research, teaching students, taking part in scientific conferences, presenting educational fossil displays, presenting public lectures and developing palaeontological teaching resources.

The Institute comprises a library with access to various scientific databases: Science Direct (collection Earth&Planetary Science), Springerlink, Lyell Collection (Journal of the Geological Society), Micropaleontology Press, EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO), and Web of Knowledge.
