Operating under the auspices of the Council of Europe, the European Museum Forum is an independent, non-profit organisation committed to raising the standard of museums throughout Europe and promoting closer co-operation between European museologists and museums. In 1977 it set up the annual EMYA (European Museum of the Year Award) to recognise the best newly-opened museums or those that have modernised their collections during the previous year. Other activities include international workshops, lectures and publications, including a quarterly Bulletin. The highlight of its year is the Annual Meeting, an international conference which culminates in the announcement of the winner of the EMYA Award. Slovenia joined the European Museum Forum in 1991. In 1999 the Annual Meeting was hosted by Slovenia, marking the first occasion on which a European Museum Forum session had been held in Central or Eastern Europe. The EMYA Awards were presented at this meeting. | Operating under the auspices of the Council of Europe, the European Museum Forum is an independent, non-profit organisation committed to raising the standard of museums throughout Europe and promoting closer co-operation between European museologists and museums.
