One of the pioneers of modern Slovene graphic arts Miha Maleš (1903–1987) donated 2,600 of his works to the town of Kamnik, and in 1979 a gallery bearing his name was opened in a renovated burgher house at 2 Glavni trg in Kamnik. Since then the Miha Maleš Collection Gallery exhibits his works in two floors and occasionally prepares exhibitions placing his work in the context of other artists and phenomena.

Miha Maleš is a big name in Slovenian art. It is one of the central, versatile personalities of Slovene fine art. Besides being academic painter and graphic he was also a great collector of works of art, the initiator and leader of Četrta generacija (Fourth generation art group), an art organizer, poet, editor and publicist. In 1977 he received Grand Prešeren Award

The collection contains all of Maleš's graphic work and a selection of his paintings and other materials. The painter's work is presented in occasional exhibitions and accompanying catalogues. A selection of works is displayed from different periods of the artist's life, techniques, and themes.
