About
TipoRenesansa organises events and workshops that aim to revive the interest and knowledge of movable type printing techniques, now widely replaced by digital technology. Their printing equipment can be rented for related project work. TipoRenesansa is a studio combining design with letterpress printing, manual binding, and cotton papers.
In this small letterpress studio everything revolves around approximately 60 years old printing techniques and machinery - lead letters, wooden letters for posters and plastic ones from the long forgotten Eastern Germany. The studio designs and prints posters, business cards and greeting cards – all on eco-friendly paper. Their printing machinery is very diverse as it ranges from a simple table top press used for test prints to the entirely automated Heideleberg GT printing machine.
TipoRenesansa team has a vast knowledge of the letterpress technique and tries to spread this knowledge in various ways. For example, they organise Festival of Letters, and even have a mobile press that is mounted on an old tricycle. They use riddles that are printed by the tricycle to tell different stories about the city, and also print pictures.
November 2017 edition of National Geographic Slovenija featured a photo essay on disappearing trades and workshops, which included a profile of TipoRenesansa and Marko Drpić, respectively.
Festival of Letters
Festival of Letters kicked off in 2010 in the frame of the World Book Capital Ljubljana 2010. The first edition featured a 50-year-old printing press including a tonne of lead and wooden letters that was installed in Kresija Gallery to print business cards, letters, and sample books.
In 2011 the festival continued with demonstrations of old printing techniques and engages the audience in print- and book-making through various workshops. The venues included Kinodvor Cinema and Mini Theatre.
