The Betetto Award is named after a composer, opera singer, and a musical pedagogue Julij Betetto (1885–1963). His musical career was established through the collaboration of the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) and the Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana where he worked as the head of the opera house. In 1961 Betetto received a Prešeren Award for his life's work.
