Ivan Tavčar Public Library in Škofja Loka, named after writer and politician Ivan Tavčar (1851–1923), opened its doors to the public in December 1945. Despite changing its name and location several times over the years, it has consistently functioned as a place where people can read newspapers and borrow books since 1862.

The library runs five branches in Trata, Poljane, Gorenja vas, Žiri, and Železniki, a lending unit at the Centre for the Blind, Visually Impaired and Elderly in Škofja Loka, and a bookmobile. The chief aim of the library is to afford its members access to knowledge and information and to foster reading culture. It strives to achieve this also by hosting a number of events for young and adult library-goers, including art exhibitions, storytelling hours, lectures, book and author presentations, and creative workshops.
