Journal publishing as a critical practice, a discussion and presentations of the Ljubljana based Šum Magazine (Tjaša Pogačar and Andrej Škufca) and the Engagée journal for political theory, coorganised by Slovenian Culture and Information Centre, Vienna (SKICA), Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Vienna,
A collaborative model
Mostly publishing mostly works by the younger generation of often self-employed cultural workers, the magazine runs a specific model of financing by way of creating a co-production network of partner institutions (public and NGOs).
Current institutions that financially back Šum – and also provide it with the infrastructure for distribution and various public activities – include Moderna galerija and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, The Municipal Gallery of Ljubljana, Art Gallery of Maribor, The International Center of Graphic Arts Ljubljana, ŠKUC Gallery, Art Gallery Slovenj Gradec and the Center for Contemporary Art Celje.
Writers and topics
The editorial team, members of which also contribute articles, is fluid and currently consists of Tjaša Pogačar, Domen Ograjenšek, Andrej Škufca, Kaja Kraner, Izidor Barši and Tomo Stanič.
Some of the texts published up until now have examined: the relation between politics and aesthetics with regards to the theory of Walter Benjamin; the work of the performance artist Sanja Iveković; the umestitev of Die Antwoord into the artistic context; translations of the work of Chantal Mouffe and Hito Steyerl; and the relation between the triad of Jacques Rivièr (critic) - Vaclav Nižinski (dance) - Antonin Artaud (poet).
