The Fabjan Hafner Translation Award for translation from Slovenian into German was founded in 2017 by Goethe-Institut Ljubljana, in cooperation with the Musil Institute in Klagenfurt in Austria and the Literary Colloquium Berlin. The award is named after the translator, poet and literary scholar Fabjan Hafner (1966–2016), whose work is considered extremely important in Slovenia. The award includes a one-month fellowship at the Literary Colloquium Berlin.

At the Slovene Book Fair in 2017, Goethe-Institut Ljubljana conferred the new Slovenian-German translation award to Štefan Vevar for his translation of The Rings of Saturn by German author Winfried Sebaldon.

In 2018 the bestowal of the Fabjan Hafner Translation Award was staged at the eminent International Book Fair in Leipzig. The award winner was Johann Strutz for the translation of the novel by Florjan Lipuš, entitled Mirne duše (Seelenruhig, published by Jung&Jung in 2017).
