Originally established as a section of the Slovene Philosophical Association, the Slovene Society of Aesthetics became an autonomous organisation in 1983. It focuses on research into avant-garde formations in culture, its main theoretical references being Aleksander Flaker, Milan Damnjanović, Aleš Erjavec, Heinz Paetzold, Paul Crowther, Lars-Olof Ohlberg, Bohdan Dziemidok, and Martin Jay.

The Slovene Society of Aesthetics is a member of International Association for Aesthetics (IAA/AIE) and organises regular international colloquia - past events include Hegemony in Art and Culture (2002), Twenty Years After: The Artistic Avant-Garde Today (2003), Art and Its Strategies: Between Aesthetics and Politics (2004), and Location of Space: The Place of Art (2005). The Society has also organised thematic Spring colloquia for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including Aesthetics and Ethics (2002), The Borders of Art (2003), Pleasure (2005) and Art Worlds (2007). In 2013 it introduced the topic Aesthetics and Space and the colloquium took place at the Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies (KSEVT) in Vitanje.
