M&KC Koper Youth and Culture Centre was established in 1991 by the Association of the Friends of Moderate Progress as a venue for alternative public cultural programmes.

Venue

M&KC Koper Youth and Culture Centre's large hall is a place for events, the Centre's Poslušalnica ('Listening Room') is open six hours each day.

The Centre incorporates the Mensa Numero Due Gallery, which hosts regular exhibitions of conceptual works on paper (posters, comics, drawings, poetry) or photo exhibitions.

Programme

The Centre promotes cultural activities and collects and distributes information on education, employment, leisure activities and culture for the growing youth and adult population, especially focusing on marginal groups of society. Here the new rock and metal bands from Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina are presented regulary. Concerts are also organised by the Centre in other open-air venues in Koper or other towns. It co-operates with other Slovene clubs, eg AKD Izbruh from Kranj and KUD Rov from Železniki. M&KC artists and activists include: Igor Presl, Matej Kocjan (Koco), Ivan Volarič (Feo), Dr Mariaš, Franci Blašković, Nikolaj Kopejkin and Franjo Frančič.

News about daily social, cultural and art happenings at M& KC Koper is issued regularly in the Klarinet newsletter, distributed via e-mail and available at Centre's website.

Projects

M&KC Koper Youth and Culture Centre organises and hosts the Koperground Festival, a festival of independent and engaged international film, literature and music every summer. The Stripzid at M&KC Koper Youth and Cultural Centre is also one of important ongoing project.

International cooperation

M&KC engages mostly in crossborder cultural exchanges and collaborations.
