Established in 1949 with the amalgamation of two earlier libraries and rehoused in new premises in 1991, Kamnik Principal Library serves the municipalities of Kamnik and Komenda. The library has branches in Duplica and Šmarca and has operated a mobile library service since 1997. It also operates movable collections at old people's homes. Covering an area of 1,460 square metres, the library offers access to a wide spectrum of literature with a reading room of 42 places, computer equipment, databases and Internet access.
In 2012 Niko sadnikar, the head of the Josip Nikolaj Sadnikar Collection, Kamnik donated over 200 antique books to the Kamnik Principal Library.
