Background
Established in 1997 by the Open Society Institute, PiNA was officially registered as The Association for Culture and Education PINA in 1998. Its aim was to support the development of a civil society and to foster public access to modern tools of information and communication technology.
In 2002, it opened its cybercafe and in 2004, together with Ljudmila and Kibla, formed the M3C Multimedia Centres Network of Slovenia, a Slovenian network of multimedia centres. In the years that followed PiNA still maintained its multimedia and technological creed, yet it also focused more extensively into the fields of arts, cross-cultural dialogue, active participation in the community, sustainable development and the dissemination of info on the European Union and its projects, opportunities and such.
Projects
The range of activities that PiNA engages in is hard to encompass. Arts and culture-wise, it has hosted exhibitions of art, comic illustration, posters, multimedia and photography at its e-caffe gallery; it screens films and documentaries, either as a part of their regular programme or in scope of their various projects (like the one on urban gardening); it organises concerts (as for example, the Sounding duo, with CONA Institute); and organises workshops on music production, film editing and so on.
There are regular activities such as trainings, exhibitions, festivals, movie nights, evenings of art performances, lectures and presentations, courses, seminars, workshops, providing of info material as well as other publications and multimedia production.
Festivals
Pina organises the 3-P festival, called the Festival of future poetry. It takes place each year in February, and is held since 2009.
Another festival, first held in 2015, is called Invisible cities and it takes place in the border cities amnd towns of Nova Gorica, Gorizia (IT), and some other. It is a multimedia festival, with AV pieces, interactive installations, theatre performances, and so on.
=Civil society projects=?
As it is impossible to sum up all of its projects (which are neatly listed on their website), one can also just name a few of the recent representative ones. One is called DigDDeep, and it is about urban gardening; under this project (done in coordination with XY) are film screenings, workshops, public lectures, and so on.
Another curious project is Iskra, which is a networking hub and a virtual meeting point for NGOs in the Karst and Istra region of Slovenia, meant for sharing experience, information and collaborative projects. Some time ago, PINA has also established Porton.si, a multimedia web portal of the Coast and Karst Region.
Among their activities is also the provision of public access to a wide range of ICT and multimedia tools. It is actively mentoring and advising on projects, assistance in organizing and advocacy of civil initiatives.
