The venue
The cinema operates in an old theatre hall dating back to 1931 and converted into a cinema in 1972. Since 2011 it also runs a summer-time venue, called Open-air cinema Arrigoni. The cinema hall contains 95 seats and is equipped with 35mm, DCP 4k and HD video film projectors as well as Dolby sound equipment.
The place additionally also serves as a sporadic venue for various other cultural events – from conferences to audiovisual events, concerts or performances
Programme
The screened films are mostly independent, quality, art and auteur-based projects, and a special emphasis is made on European and Slovenian films. Additionally the are various quality cinema features for the younger audiences. Only occasionally there are more mainstream flicks.
This programme is augmented by various events, like Cinema Live evenings, during which screenings are accompanied by either movie directors or actors or by discussions on a given theme. Another feature is called Cinema Girandola (Kino Vetrnica) – during the weekends, the first screenings are dedicated to the youngest audience. The cinema also cooperates with schools, runs retrospectives of film classics, and sets up special events for screening short films. There are also occasional workshops on various topics and skills. In 2016 it started a programme of live shows by the podcast emmision FilmFlow, taking place at the cinema after film screenings.
Festivals
Art kino Odeon Izola is among the main venues and co-producers of Kino Otok - Isola Cinema Festival as the main cinema event in the region. Together Slovenian Animated Film Association they also organised the Slovenian Animated Film Review, a showcase of contemporary animated film around here that takes place somewhat sporadically.
The cinema also hosts the Eye on Film Festival and the European Film Week. It runs a programme of films featured at the Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe) (called Liffe po Liffu) and at Animateka International Animated Film Festival. The place was also the venue for IZIS, a newly formed coastal festival of contemporary multimedia art.
