The Faculty of Design was established in 2005 in Ljubljana as a private independent institution of higher education. Since 2011 it has been an associated member of the University of Primorska.

The Faculty of Design offers undergraduate and postgraduate (masters) programmes in Interior Design, Visual Communications, Design Management, and Textile, Fashion, and Jewelery Design (Jewelery Design is only available as a bachelor programme). The programmes were conceived in accordance with the Bologna Declaration standards following the example of comparable European programmes. The programmes are interdisciplinary and based on team work. The faculty's mission is to provide designers with the knowledge required to produce innovative design solutions.

International cooperation

The Faculty of Design organises a number of workshops and guest lectures featuring professors from foreign partner institutions as well as student and staff exchange programmes.

Since 2006 the faculty has participated in the European Lifelong Learning Programme within the Erasmus framework. The programme partner institutions from Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Since 2008 the Faculty of Design has participated in international events with institutions from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, and Switzerland.

The Faculty of Design is a member of several international education groups and is currently in the process of establishing one of its own, the A.L.I.C.E. (Architecture Landscape Interior Culture) programme. The Faculty of Design has been a member of the World Design Organization since 2017.
