TipoRenesansa Studio is a non-profit studio for typography and printing heritage, founded in 2010 by graphic designer and calligrapher Marko Drpić and his wife, jewellery and graphic designer Maja Licul. Together they recreated an old letterpress printing shop in the centre of Ljubljana. TipoRenesansa is the last place in Slovenia where one can experience how printing was done before contemporary technology took over the process.

About

TipoRenesansa organises events and workshops that aim to revive the interest and knowledge of movable type printing techniques, now widely replaced by digital technology. Their printing equipment can be rented for related project work. TipoRenesansa is a studio combining design with letterpress printing, manual binding and cotton papers.

In this small letterpress studio, everything revolves around approximately 60-year-old printing techniques and machinery: lead letters, wooden letters for posters and plastic ones from long-forgotten Eastern Germany. The studio designs and prints posters, business cards and greeting cards – all on eco-friendly paper. Their printing machinery is very diverse as it ranges from a simple tabletop press used for test prints to the entirely automated Heidelberg GT printing machine.

The TipoRenesansa team has a vast knowledge of the letterpress technique and tries to spread this knowledge in various ways. For example, they organise the Festival of Letters and even have a mobile press that is mounted on an old tricycle. They use riddles that are printed by the tricycle to tell different stories about the city and also print pictures.

The November 2017 edition of National Geographic Slovenija featured a photo essay on disappearing trades and workshops, which included a profile of TipoRenesansa and Marko Drpić, respectively.

Festival of Letters

The Festival of Letters kicked off in 2010 in the frame of the World Book Capital Ljubljana 2010. The first edition featured a 50-year-old printing press including a tonne of lead and wooden letters that was installed in Kresija Gallery to print business cards, letters, and sample books.

In 2011, the festival continued with demonstrations of old printing techniques and engaged the audience in printmaking and bookmaking through various workshops. The venues included Kinodvor Cinema and Mini Theatre.
