at the jazzahead! Festival and Trade Fair
Programmes include regular orchestral subscription series featuring the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and foreign visiting orchestras, chamber music, and vocal music subscription series, an operatic subscription series featuring international co-productions with Slovene opera houses, and a jazz subscription series.
Symphonic concerts are organised regularly. The Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra presents Cankarjev dom's Blue and Orange Subscription Season Series, while the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra stages nine concerts in the centre's Green Season Subscription Series. Both orchestras also hold over 20 concerts for young audiences, provided with a commentary, in co-operation with Music Youth of Slovenia and Music Youth of Ljubljana. Especially popular are the concerts performed within the centre's Golden Season Subscription Series, which embrace world-renowned visiting international orchestras with prominent conductors and the most sought-after vocal and instrumental soloists of our time.
Cankarjev dom's chamber music programme is presented within the Silver Season Subscription Series and the International Master Series - these concerts are often given in the Slovene Philharmonics Halls. Some chamber concerts and pipe organ concerts are held in the Gallus Hall, mostly guest appearances by particularly compelling music figures. The annual Sound of Six Strings Series also features four evenings of guitar music in the Slovene Philharmonics Hall, while Cankarjev dom’s programme also includes different chamber concerts by Slovene musicians for non-subscribers.
Vocal music is represented in concerts by Slovene groups and guest appearances by foreign choirs or vocal groups given in the Gallus Hall or the Slovene Philharmonics Halls. A regular annual concert is held by the Academic Choir Tone Tomšič, and other Slovene vocal groups appear occasionally. In co-operation with the Slovene Chamber Choir, two annual guest appearances by an international vocal group and a choir within the Vocal Subscription Series of the Slovene Philharmonics are generally organised.
The annual AIDA International subscription series features operatic productions organised in co-operation between Slovene opera houses and foreign music theatre establishments. The 2007-2008 programme featured the operas Yin & Yang and Carmen by Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Opera and Ballet, a concert by a blues singer Barbara Hendricks, the chamber opera Mnemosyne, and a performance by the Royal Ballet of Cambodia.
The introduction of the Jazz Season Subscription Series in 2002 was an important event in the Cankarjev dom programme, presenting a first-rate programme of jazz music (sometimes in collaboration with the Cerkno Jazz Festival run by Jazz Cerkno Festival, or the Skrite note programme in Maribor) comparable to the annual Ljubljana Jazz Festival. Ten concerts in nine evenings feature all kinds of open, creative and contemporary music styles.
Cankarjev dom also regularly features groups that are dedicated to upholding the Slovene folklore tradition. Gallus Hall hosts the regular annual concert of the France Marolt Academic Folklore Group, as well as other folklore groups. The programme of Cankarjev dom regularly involves guest appearances by foreign folklore groups and has introduced Slovene audiences to the rich tradition of world folk cultures.
