Established on 1 May 1958, Maribor National Liberation Museum is housed in a burgher villa, situated on the corner of Mladinska ulica and Ulica heroja Tomšiča, which was commissioned in the mid 1890s by the Maribor entrepreneur Gustav Scherbaum. It is a historical museum which approaches the recent history of north eastern Slovenia in a museological and historiographical manner. Its holdings also include rich archive material.

The current permanent displays include several sections, among them also Sssh! Maribor 1941-1945, Maribor is free, and A Monument to Maribor's Industry – Industrial Maribor in 20th Century. Since May 2012 the museum manages also the Museum of Photography in Maribor.
The memorial sites in the region are the Pohorje Partisan Exhibition and the Zidanšek Pohorje Brigade Exhibition.
