In 2009 the first Slovenia Press Photo Festival (SPP) took place in National Gallery of Slovenia (in 2010 it moved to Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre). This competitive festival was established by SPP Institute for Promotion of Photography in order to promote the press and documentary photography in Slovenia. The competition on a national level concludes with an exhibition of the awarded works, selected by an international jury of prominent experts (Christopher Morris, Adriana Zehbrauskas, Murad Sezer, Oded Balilty, and Heidi Levine in 2010). It is accompanied by an overview exhibition of a renowned international press agency (Associated Press in 2009, Göksin Sipahioglu, the founder of Sipa Press, in 2010), thematic exhibition (War VII by VII Photo Agency), lectures and courses.
The festival awards the work (individual photographs or a story comprised of 3 to 10 photos) in the following sections: News, People, Sports, Entertainment & Culture, and Nature & Environment. In 2009 Luka Cjuha and Jaka Gasar won the main prize and the exhibition of the awarded works travelled also to the gallery in the Sevnica Castle.
