The Nonument Group investigates 20th-century architecture, monuments, and public spaces that have undergone a shift in symbolic meaning — or lost it altogether — as a consequence of political and social change. The collective's members are artists and producers Neja Tomšič and Martin Bricelj Baraga, and architects, researchers, and publicists Nika Grabar and Miloš Kosec. The art collective operates within the Nonument platform, an ongoing research and artistic project initiated by MoTA Museum of Transitory Art in 2015, and has since featured at the Nova Gorica–Gorizia, European Capital of Culture (2025) and Venice Biennial (2026).

Background

The Nonument Group grew out of the broader activities of MoTA Museum of Transitory Art. Martin Bricelj Baraga and MoTA producer and artist Neja Tomšič launched Nonuments as long-term project of research and artistic production engaging with monuments, landmarks, and other symbolically charged public spaces. The project brought Tomšič a fellowship at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, through which they realised Nonument 01: McKeldin Fountain in collaboration with Lisa Moren and Jaimes Mayhew at the Transmodern Festival in Baltimore.
