European cooperation has become an essential framework for the sustainable development and international visibility of Slovenia’s cultural and creative sectors. Through collaborative projects, professional networks, mobility schemes, festivals and platforms, Slovenian cultural organisations actively contribute to a shared European cultural space while strengthening their own capacities and international reach.

Insights into funding outcomes

This section explores how Slovenian culture engages with European partners and contributes to broader processes of cultural exchange. It highlights policies, programmes and initiatives that foster cross-border cooperation, as well as the achievements of Slovenian cultural organisations within European support frameworks. Particular attention is given to the EU Creative Europe programme (2014–2027) and its predecessors, which have expanded opportunities for international partnerships, artistic exchange, professional development and audience engagement since the early 2000s. Drawing on data, analyses and case studies, the section offers insights into funding outcomes, long-term trends and successful models of international cultural cooperation.

EU funding

European funding programmes have played a key role in the international development of Slovenia’s cultural, creative, film and audiovisual sectors. Since 2002, Slovenian organisations have participated in hundreds of European projects, developing cross-boder partnerships, strengthening professional capacities and bringing Slovenian creativity to international audiences.

The interactive infographics provide an overview of EU funding secured by Slovenian organisations through Creative Europe and its predecessor programmes between 2002 and 2025. They visualise supported projects, participating organisations, funding schemes and long-term trends in European cultural cooperation (based on a specialised database developed and maintained by the Motovila Institute, which hosts the Creative Europe Desk Slovenia).

Creative Europe Ambassadors

What does European cooperation actually change for artists, organisations and cultural communities? In the final period of Creative Europe (2021–2027), before the implementation of the AgoraEU funding programme for the cultural and creative sectors, we invited selected Slovenian cultural professionals to reflect on what participation in European projects has brought to their organisations – and what it has changed along the way.

In the performing arts, we spoke with Alma R. Selimović from Bunker Institute, and Barbara Poček and Inga Remeta from Glej Theatre. Blaž Gregorin from Invida shares his perspective on cross-sectoral, technology-driven projects, while Urša Strehar Benčina and Bjanka Kršmanc from Pionirski dom reflect on cultural education and youth participation. The audiovisual and film sector is represented by Tanja Hladnik from Kino Otok Festival and Marina Gumzi from Nosorogi film studio.
