Every Autumn since 1966, various Slovene theatres have met in Maribor at the [[Borštnik Meeting, Slovene Theatre Festival]], where awards for achievement in the repertory theatres of Maribor, Ljubljana, Nova gorica, Celje, Kranj, Koper and Trst are received by directors, actors, set designers and other theatre practitioners. The Borštnik Ring Award is the highest award for lifetime achievement in Slovene theatre, which is given to an actor or actress who has left a major legacy to the Slovene stage.

Institute and the Slovenian Theatre Institute to create a digital online exhibition of the previous year's festival highlights and winners of the Borštnik Awards and Borštnik Ring. This collaboration involved Prodok teater TV, Slovene theatre houses, and regional archives. The resulting e-xhibition included documentary photos, videos, and audio excerpts of the winning performances, as well as the closing awards ceremony. The e-xhibition has now become an annual component of the festival, and the list of years included is expanding to cover years prior to 2012. The e-xhibitions are accessible at [[Sigledal.org - Slovene theatre portal]] and provide a comprehensive overview of the Borštnik Award winners.

The Borštnik Ring Award and Borštnik Awards are bestowed at the central festival of Slovene theatre, the Maribor Theatre Festival. Every year the Borštnik Ring Award, the highest accolade for theatre actors in Slovenia, is presented alongside awards bestowed by a separate international expert jury for outstanding achievements of the previous year across a range of categories.
