The Ivan Rakovec Institute of Palaeontology was founded in 1949 and named after Ivan Rakovec (1899–1985), a Slovene geologist and palaeontologist. A part of the Scientific Research Centre (ZRC SAZU) at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), the institute collects, conserves, studies, and interprets the rich fossil heritage of Slovenia. The findings of the institute are made known by publishing its research, teaching students, taking part in scientific conferences, presenting educational fossil displays, presenting public lectures, and developing palaeontological teaching resources.

The Institute of Palaeontology comprises a library with access to various scientific databases: Science Direct (collection Earth&Planetary Science), Springerlink, Lyell Collection (Journal of the Geological Society), Micropaleontology Press, EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO), and Web of Knowledge.
