Launched in 1998 as the Visuality Summer School, the Summer School of Visual Ethnography is organised annually by the Audiovisual Laboratory, Institute of Slovene Ethnology.

It is an annual 7 to 10 day training summer school which aims to develop skills and contemporary methods of recording audio-visual material and dealing with it, from subject research and analysis to editing. The school proposes that skills acquired in the field of non-artistic film and video which are employed in science might be usefully applied to the use of visual information in various educational, cultural and research activities, while research into visuality that is usually developed within the scope of arts and humanities could also be incorporated into broad educational practice, thus bringing science closer to education. Participants include pupils, students, museum workers, tutors, and researchers who are interested in visual ethnography and visual anthropology.

Past tutors have included Peter Crawford, Aleš Doktorič, Jože Dolmark, Beate Engelbrecht, Aurora Fonda, Silvan Furlan, Janez Hönn, Allison Jablonko, Naško Križnar, Amir Muratović, Stojan Pelko, Nataša Prosenc, Janez Strehovec, Zdenko Vrdlovec, Melita Zajc, Andrej Zdravič and many others. Between 1998 and 2012 it was done in Nova Gorica, in collaboration with the local branch of the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia.
